Asa ca Ikea a expus prima oara la Targul de la Milano si tot asa orice muritor din Rahova, Ferentari, Dobroesti, Pipera, Voluntari, Afumati sau nu isi cumpara "mobila de expozitie". Apropos de Ikea, colectia expusa la Milano, Ikea PS este aceeasi sarbatoare inventivitatii si bucuriei de a crea obiecte.

Pamantul este un material de constructie vechi de cand lumea. Mai mult de o treime din populatia Terrei locuieste in prezent in case din pamant. Lutul a fost adaptat diferitelor conditii climatice, de la zonele fierbinti ale Ecuatorului la regiunile reci si ploiase ale Scandinaviei. Cu toatea acestea, arhitectura de lut din nordul Europei este mai putin cunoscuta decat cea a Africii, Americii Latine si Asiei din cauza prejudecatii europene potrivit careia lutul este materialul celor saraci, folosit in vremuri de restriste.

Constructiile din pamant sunt asociate astazi nu numai cu notiunea de vernacular, dar si cu cea de arhitectura verde, arhitectura ecologica, arhitectura durabila. Traditia de a construi in lut se lupta cu prejudecati de natura economica, culturala si politica. Cati oameni au puterea de a(-si) invinge ideile preconcepute si neincrederea celor din jur atunci cand investesc intr-o casa de pamant?

Grupul Arhiterra va invita pe 7 aprilie sa descoperiti modernitatea lutului cu ocazia colocviului sustinut de prof. Gernot Minke de la Universitatea din Kassel (Germania). Prof. Minke este autorul cartii Construind cu pamant. Proiectare si tehnologii pentru o arhitectura durabila, a carei lansare va avea loc in aceeasi zi. Evenimentul este organizat in colaborare cu Ordinul Arhitectilor din Romania.

AUTOR, primul târg românesc de bijuterii de designer

Sîmbătă, 4 aprilie, are loc AUTOR, cel dintâi târg de bijuterie contemporană de designer de la noi, în spaţiul binecunoscut şi neconvenţional sub_Cărtureşti, din librăria omonimă de pe Bulevardul Magheru. Târgul este o extensie firească a expoziţiei de bijuterie de designer Extins, eveniment ce şi-a căpătat locul şi identitatea în cadrul peisajului artistic românesc graţie celor două ediţii din 2007 şi 2008. Extins a creionat deja obiectivele acestui tip de demers, care propune relevarea numelor consacrate sau emergente de designeri de bijuterii, punerea lor în valoare şi asigurarea unei vizibilităţi binevenite acestui domeniu şi artiştilor lui. Iniţiatorul proiectelor Extins şi AUTOR, Dan Pierşinaru, intenţionează ca prin această primă ediţie a târgului AUTOR să facă un pas mai departe în demersul său, facilitînd publicului accesul direct către bijuteria de designer care înseamnă concept, unicitate şi autenticitate.

Pe 4 aprilie, aceste obiecte de artă ale tinerilor designeri de bijuterii vor ieşi din cadrul expoziţional pentru a putea fi admirate, atinse şi achiziţionate la tîrgul de profil AUTOR. Selecţia realizată de Dan Pierşinaru are aceleaşi standarde ca şi în cazul evenimentului Extins şi reuneşte nume importante, respectiv designerii de bijuterii David Sandu, Mihaela Tarhuna, Angi Apostol, Carla Szabo, Mihaela Zvinca, Andra Lupu, Roxana Davidescu, Ana Wagner, Maria Filipescu, Alina Băncilă, Jennifer Delplanque, Lola Dream Factory, Elena Crişan, Alexandru Lupu, Ioana Matei, Radha, Raluca Drăcea, Oana Pop, Dana Ştefănoiu, brandurile Acarete, Elephant, Freevole şi alţii.

Expoziţia va fi deschisă între orele 11.00 - 20.00.

The project is based on the idea that in the near future, ethical living is no longer a life style we choose, but a life style we all will need to adjust to. The intention is to make ethical living functional and more attractive whilst providing an understanding of how nature and consumption are connected.

The kitchen island is a sink and a preparation surface where you prepare and compost food and recycle the packaging. The compost on one side feeds the growing plant on the other, which is watered by ‘grey water’ through a drip mechanism attached to the waste pipe. The life of the plant relies on how well you adapt to ethical living, and the aesthetics of the unit is therefore a unique reflection of our actions.

am in minte suprafete scaldate in culori pline, calde sau reci, care sa isi vorbeasca desigur cu restul spatiului – asta pentru cuverturi. Suntem mereu in fata unei optiuni, nu vitale, sa nu exageram, dar importante pentru starea noastra si pentru felul in care comunicam cu spatiul in care locuim. Sa ramanem sobri sau sa ne bucuram de culoare. Optiuni, optiuni.

despre materiale

folosesc materiale naturale, bumbac imprimat, soie sauvage, lina, in, taffetas, niciunul nu este prea scump pentru a face sa straluceasca sofaua ta preferata sau dormitorul.

Totul este finisat cu o bordura din trei rinduri cusute de mana cu fir de matase colorata care isi schimba nuantele vibrind in tonurile materialului sau surprinzind curajos cu un accent ciclame. Matasea le da greutate si daca ne plictisim de benzile late in mai multe tonuri de rosu, cuvertura se poate intoarce pe cealalta fata, pe care o fac de obicei uni.

Pernele sunt pentru mine adevarate dive – trebuie sa fie sclipitoare, colorate, salvatoare in griul zilelor curgatoare. Ca sarbatorile. Asa incit, daca materialul este inflorat umplu flori cu paiete, asta le schimba consistenta – devin frumoase si pline de mister – un fel de Venetii tacute dupa carnaval.

de ce Itaka?

Fiindca m-am gandit la legendara Penelopa si la felul ei harnic de a astepta. E bucuria inegalabila a lucrului facut pina la capat. Atat de rar astazi.

Decoratiunile interioare de fapt asta fac: salveaza intr-un fel spatii, le innoiesc, le transforma, le innobileaza. La asta putem visa cu totii.

fac o plecaciune catre un muzeu foarte iubit in Bucuresti - Muzeul Taranului Roman – care si-a deschis cu generozitate portile si catre creatia urbana. fiindca printre martisoare, vase pictate si perne decorative pe care incercam sa le lansez la unul dintre targurile organizate la muzeu - mi-a venit ideea sa aduc podoabele pe care mi le facusem singura, dupa cautari esuate prin putinele magazine de resort de la acea vreme.

adusesem toate creatiile si in doua ore nu le mai aveam… asa incat acest succes colosal de piata - cheia oricarei lansari de produs - mi-a dat aripi si m-a facut sa ma gandesc serios sa inventez podoabe cum nu mai vazusem in niciun alt loc.

erau foarte diferite de ceea ce concep acum.

cele cateva sute de incercari le-am gandit pe toate pentru mine - suna egocentric, dar cu timpul am nuantat - accesorii, volum, greutate.

asa am inceput sa insir:

bucati de lume stralucitoare odata, fragmente de timp, pe care daca le privesti cu atentie, le poti data sau descifra, bile pictate, site, fluiere, solnite, sticle de parfum, dopuri de pluta puse nonsalant langa agate, corali, jaduri, perle, pietre de la 2 Mai, butoni desperecheati, nasturi frumosi de sidef, scrumiere, zurgalai, clopotei indieni, chei mari si mici – e o lista interminabila si surprinzatoare la prima vedere. Am enumerat mai sus doar piesele recognoscibile, pe celelalte va invit sa le descoperiti singuri....

din cand e bine sa razi si sa te miri de lucrurile pe care le porti tu insati. Asadar pentru unele dintre ele e nevoie de curaj, de umor si de o anumita atitudine. Daca esti trista te binedispun si daca esti vulnerabila te apara, ca toate podoabele adevarate.

sunt si un fel de Fata Morgana, fiidca te duc cu gandul. iar femeile adora mirajul asta.

cand auzi de sticla de Murano, esti cu mintea la Venetia, daca vezi coralii mari roz, te crezi in Sicilia, margelele rosii te fac sa te gandesti la Frida Kahlo, iar siragurile aurii nu sunt falsuri - sunt lemnisoare vopsite bila cu bila si lacuite pe deasupra. nu isi propun sa para altceva decat sunt de fapt, alaturarile sunt cele care le fac sa vibreze, iar intregul sa devina in cele din urma echilibrat in toata asimetria voita cu tot dinadinsul. acum cativa ani cand am descoperit Villa Giulia, la Roma, aproape ca mi-am vazut fragmente de siraguri in colectia de podoabe etrusce, rafinate, asimetrice, si m-am simtit bine, fiindca nu poti reinventa roata, dar poti face in continuare roti frumoase.

scoicile incastrate si coralii rosii cumparati la Balcik asta-vara au dat nastere unei serii albe si rosii somptuoase purtate odata de Regina Maria. cel putin asa mi-am imaginat eu. am reevaluat perlele cu tonuri rozalii sau fumurii si le-am aruncat printre scoici si lemn ivoriu. sunt zgarzile scumpe si grele fiindca te misti altfel sub "povara" lor, coplesita in cel mai placut sens al cuvantului.

acum un an am vizitat Muzeul Benaki in Atena - o vila clasica de forma unui cub aproape perfect - un fel de Arca lui Noe pe pamant elen - in care au pus toate comorile de salvat - de la arta cretana, minoica pana la Grecia moderna: bijuterii antice facute dintr-un aur-soare-pur, piese de port de o frumusete rara, ceramica pictata, pictura.

calatorii ca acestea devin cele mai subtile si mai rafinate surse de inspiratie - ca o sita prin care cerni de azi inainte - lumea.

siragurile d'or sunt podoabe in podoabe – exista zone transparente si fragile care alterneaza cu zone puternice. si eu cred ca e bine asa – fiindca bijuteriile sau accesoriile sunt accente in vestimentatie, deci seduc prin forta si farmec.

despre felul in care se impun publicului.

nu exista o reteta. Podoabele sunt obiecte care vin foarte aproape de trup – si aici sunt legi afective care le fac sa fie acceptate sau nu. Podoabele nu tin de varsta.

Sunt ultim retus in fata oglinzii, dupa ultima umbra de fard, dupa ultimul gram de parfum. ne dau puterea sa iesim in lume sau sa ne aratam pur si simplu. ele spun pe muteste tot ce nu putem rosti totdeauna prin viu grai: azi sunt fericita, azi sunt vulnerabila, azi vreau sa ma apere sau azi vreau sa plac cu orice pret.

despre gramatica insiratului

nu am povestit niciodata cum le fac – am inchipuit un cadru alcatuit din "lemnisoare" – bilele vopsite si lacuite bucata cu bucata – care dau volumul fara a ingreuna prea tare siragul in sine. apoi intra in scena – Piesele-dive – inventate, adaptate pentru a fi insirate, care isi pierd functionalitatea initiala, devenind pretioase prin material. si capatand o noua identitate si vecinatati surprinzatoare. le descoperim in imagini: sita de la esspresorul de cafea, scrumiere de poseta, lentilele de ochelari de soare proaspat abandonate…

ce ne inspira

structuri naturale, de arhitectura, peisaje, imagini in aparenta fara legatura cu accesoriul sau cu trimiteri directe la forma si culoare, scenografii de plan secund elaborate sau intamplatore.

despre atelier

o casa stil vagon – construita de strabunicul la inceputul secolului trecut – se preface dupa voia locatarelor. Are rabdare cu noi – si se prinde surazand in jocul-nostru-cu-margele-de-sticla…

The pluses and minuses of ubiquitous plastic

LONDON: What are the architectural icons of our time? Which buildings - or bits of buildings - will be the contemporary equivalents of Gothic cathedrals with flying buttresses, Palladian porticos or the flashy facades of Art Deco cinemas?

Will it be the surreal shapes of digitally designed structures like Herzog & de Meuron's Olympic Stadium and Rem Koolhaas's China Central Television headquarters in Beijing? Or a visionary eco-home? Almost certainly is the answer to the first question, and let's hope so to the second. But if we were to assess the candidates in terms of quantity, rather than design quality, a strong contender would be what is probably the commonest architectural feature of the early 21st century - the plastic window frame.

That's right, those ugly plastic (or, to be precise, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, alias PVC-u) frames that come in bilious shades of white with clumsily shaped handles. They're not very nice to look at, or to touch. Ask architects what they think of them and they'll either sneer, or say something unprintable. Yet millions of windows now have plastic frames. You'd be hard pressed to walk along a street in any European city or town, without spotting a few of them, probably more. You'll find them in most newly built homes (except for very, very expensive ones) as well as office buildings, warehouses, factories and the recently renovated tower blocks on British council estates and in France's grungier banlieues.

They even appear on architectural landmarks. Take the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage in Moscow, which was designed in 1926 by the great Soviet architect, Konstantin Melnikhov. After being neglected for decades, the building was restored before reopening last year to house the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, a nonprofit art gallery run by the Russian socialite Dasha Zhukova and her oligarch boyfriend, Roman Abramovich.

As the original windows were broken, new ones were installed in the same geometric style as Melnikhov's originals, but in a different material - plastic.

Jarring as it is to see plastic windows in a Constructivist gem like the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, most of the time we barely notice them. They are the architectural equivalent of cheap monobloc plastic chairs, which are so ubiquitous that they've become invisible. We deal with plastic windows and chairs in the same way as with other unappealing elements of daily life: by editing them out, usually without realizing it.

Is that right? Or is it silly and snobbish of us to ignore something that's (literally) such a large part of our lives? There are, after all, sensible reasons why plastic windows have become so popular. They were introduced in the 1980s and sold so well that, by the end of the 1990s, more than half of all replacement domestic window frames in Europe were made of PCV-u. One reason is that they cost less than the old-fashioned softwood windows used in housing, and the metal ones in public buildings. Another is that plastic frames last longer, and are easier to maintain. Unlike softwood, plastic doesn't rot, nor does it need to be painted as protection against the elements.

So far, so good, but plastic windows also have their drawbacks. One is aesthetic. They don't look as good as wooden or metal frames, in fact they often look cheap and tacky. Another is environmental. Like most plastic products, PVC-u frames can't be repaired if they break. Moreover, the PVC-u production process releases what the ecological pressure group, Greenpeace, describes as "some of today's most damaging industrial pollutants," as does its disposal, regardless of whether it is incinerated or dumped on landfill sites. Greenpeace has called for PVC-u windows to be banned, and replaced by less damaging alternatives, such as sustainable wooden frames.

In other words, PVC-u window frames score highly on practicality, but poorly on environmental responsibility. They belong to the new category of objects that are both modernist dreams and post-modernist nightmares, because they have many of the qualities required of "good design" in the last century, but few of the sustainable virtues demanded in this one.

Again, there is a parallel with plastic monobloc chairs, which are inexpensive, light, stackable and easy to clean, but impossible to repair and doomed to swamp landfill sites for decades to come. Another example is the Nano, the "people's car" that Tata Motors hopes to sell to millions of Indians. If all goes well, it will be the sort of cheap (if not quite as cheap as Tata's original target price of 100,000 rupees, or about $2,000) compact family car, which would once have been hailed as a democratic design coup. But that won't happen unless Tata can also squash fears that the Nano will belch out pollution and clog up India's roads.

Tata's plans for an electric Nano may crack the first problem, though not the second. It is harder to see how the cheap plastic chair can redeem itself, but there is hope for plastic windows. On the environmental front, the simplest solution is for frame manufacturers to ditch PVC-u for less damaging types of plastic. Greenpeace favors the use of polyolefin-based plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, on the grounds that they are cleaner to produce and easier to recycle. Some companies have already made the change.

There is even hope for plastic windows in terms of aesthetics. Problematic though it is in other respects, plastic has fantastic sculptural possibilities. It is equally versatile when it comes to color. That's why postwar designers, such as Verner Panton, loved it, and why it still appeals to their successors, like Konstantin Grcic, whose MYTO plastic chair has been hailed as the contemporary equivalent of Panton's famous 1959 S-shaped chair. There is no reason why plastic window frames should not be equally adventurous, if - and it's a big "if" - architects and designers felt inclined to invest their time and energy in making the most of them.

Casa invizibila

Biroul de arhitecura R&Sie Architects propune (cred ca asta e cuvantul) un experiment care pune intre paranteze esenta actului de arhitectura. O casa perfect invizibila pentru ca este complet acoperita de vegetatie. Ascunsa de ochii celor trecatorilor, in schimb foarte prezenta pentru proprietari (efectiv, casa trebuie ingrijita ca si un organism).

Locuinta este acoperita cu vegetatie care este hranita printr-un sistem complex. Substantele hranitoare sunt pastrate chiar pe suprafata exterioara a cladirii in niste "clondire" lucrate manual.

Ce mi se pare interesant la acesta cladire este demersul teoretic implicit. Pentru cine a fost creata? Numai pentru cei care o locuiesc? Trecatorii nu au nici un rol in acest caz? Practic cladirea este invizibila. Si, in acest caz, mai este o simpla cladire? Materia inerta primeste o "injectie" de viata. Iar rezultatul este un concept deschis, care poate primi o multime de raspunsuri.

Ziduri vii

O baie mai verde nu se poate

Imi displace profund plasticul. Dar sunt nevoit sa traiesc cu el. Incerc pe cat pot sa scap de el: una din bai am placat-o cu calcar iar covorasul (care aproape de fiecare data e facut din pastic) de iesit din dus e din lemn. Dar iata ca cineva s-a gandit ca lemnul si piatra nu sunt de ajuns: o carpeta din muschi. Senzatia in talpi trebuie fie fenomenala...

Despre o lampa si un scaun

Design de obiect semnat de arhitectii din echipa Serban si Doina Sturdza. Mai sus: lampa Verona (alama si forma lor au au aer de industrializare de secol XIX), iar restul infatiseaza ipostaze ale genialului scaun "Saddam". Saddam mi se pare un obiect construit din detalii (fara aceste detalii ar semana mai mult cu o lucrare de arta contemporana): sceheletul de tevi, pernele care nu au nimic placut la vedere si tetiera din metal... Pur si simplu imi inspira un scaun de de sef de trib local dar totul asezonat cu un "praf de ascetism": pe scurt, un scaun de aratat si nu de sezut pe el...

Cu umor despre prize

N-am mai scris de mult despre designus scandinav. Gasesc acum (si ma grabesc sa postez) o piesa de mobilier (Powerwise) creata de Johanna Strand si Åsa Elmstam. Ideea in sine e buna: eliberati spatiul de incarcatoare si prize pentru a crea un loc curat (nu aseptic).

In schimb, ce mi se pare superb si care serveste minunat idealului suedez de interior alb, cat mai luminos, este modul cum piesa asta de mobilier (modesta, in cele din urma) epureaza spatiul de paraziti precum cabluri si incarcatoare. Singurul compromis este firul electric care iese din piciorul mobilierului. Dar alaturarea de culori (verde si alb) mi se pare ca subliniaza si mai mult intentia si reprezinta in acelasi timp un avertisment bland, facut cu umor.

Aflu din International Herald Tribune ca rusii ar fi reusit un furt industrial cu consecinte greu de intrevazut in momentul asta: au reusit sa reproduca modelul de camuflaj al armatei finlandeze. Finlandezii si-au dat seama de asta in timpul razboiului cu Georgia de asta vara. Problema se dezbate cu multa seriozitate in mass media finlandeza. Problema e bine documentata de International Herald Tribune: "Ziaristii finlandezi se bazeaza pe observatii extrem de fine, cum ar fi analiza modelului de camuflaj neregulat al armatei finladeze si pe gradatiile de verde mediu si verde deschis. Folosindu-se de fotografii ale armatei ruse din timpul conflictului dintre Rusi si Georgia, autoritatile finlandeze incearca sa determine daca rusii purtau haine de lupta care aveau imprimat model M/05, un pattern bazat pe imagini digitale ale padurii finlandeze. Seria 'Float' sunt creatia designerului Seongyong Lee. Sfera goala de la mijlocul furculitelor, lingurilor sau orice se mai foloseste prin bucatarie (coreeana sau europeana...aici a fost decizia designerului) permite veselei sa pluteasca. De cat sa mai pescuiesti de pe fundul chiuvetei vesela, mai bine cumperi seria Float si le lasi sa pluteasca (pahare aisberg, farfurii-insule plutitoare, toate numai bune sa ameninte vesela plutitoare)

Bucureştenii care doresc să se căsătorească sau să îşi înmatriculeze automobilul vor putea face acest lucru numai dacă vor planta un copac.
Proiectul Primăriei Capitalei ar putea fi pus în aplicare până la sfârşitul anului.
Potrivit iniţiativei, copacul trebuie plantat în zonele stabilite, cu un angajat de la spaţii verzi. Bucureştenii vor primi un certificat pe care trebuie să îl prezinte dacă intenţionează să se căsătorească sau să îşi înmatriculeze maşina.
Iniţiatorul proiectului, viceprimarul Robert Ionescu, a afirmat că speră ca astfel numărul copacilor să ajungă undeva la "100.000-150.000".

Alaltaieri am cautat intr-o doara situl biroului de arhitectura Serban Sturdza si l-am gasit!!! (www. a2a.ro) Mie chestia asta asta mi-a facut ziua. Ma bucur sa postez adresa sitului pe blogul asta; am sentimentul ca fac un gest de onoare. Mai mult, sunt fericit ca pot posta poze cu locuinta din strada Cantilli. O opera de arhitectura boiereasca (n-are legatura cu stilul casei pe care o gasesc nimerita pentru un patrician). Pe site locuinta e semnata de Arh. Andreea Hangiu. Am vazut casa asta minunata acum cativa ani in revista Arhitectura si m-a uluit. Am regasit constructia prezentata generos in albumul editat de Igloo, "Case din Romania".

Mega editura Phaidon Press a publicat o monografie despre fratii Ronan si Erwan Bouroullec. Acum, sa fiu sincer, Bouroullecii sunt o pereche de designeri care continua sa ma impresioneze. Melanjul creativ al acestei perechi formidabile de tip "ergonomia anului 2300" combinat cu caldura unor solutii care de multe de te uimesc prin simplitate, e surprinzator. IKEA Idea With Velorbis Bikes

IKEA of Denmark is now starting a new concept at their Danish stores. They did a bit of market research and found that roughly 20% of their customers rode their bikes to the stores - even though most of then are located outside the cities in large commerical centres - some call them Big Box Districts - which are located outside the city centre.
In Copenhagen we have two IKEAs. One is about 10 km from the city centre, the other is about 20 km. I, myself, have made the former trip several times on my 3-speed, carrying all manner of cumbersome goods home to the nest. It's great to learn that so many other IKEA customers ride their bikes out there, too.
Doesn't surprise me, really, that so many Danes ride to such lengths for such purposes. But it is cool that IKEA respects the fact by launching a concept that celebrates the fact.

IKEA has invested in Velorbis bikes, at a couple of their stores, that will pull trailers so that customers can ride home with the new purchases. Inexpensive Swedish design pulled home on bespoke Danish design. I like that.

They'll test drive the concept and, if all goes well, they'll implement across the nation and then to other cycle friendly countries.
Whenever Wifealiciousness and I buy something too big for normal bike transport, we hire a van - IKEA collaborates with a transport company located in their stores - or take a taxi. It's always irritating to us that we can't get home on the bikes or the bus with large items.
Even though we don't have that much IKEA in our home, there are certain things we buy.This is a system we will use and we're looking forward to it.

Am gasit lucruri interesante, multe locuri comune si numai o locuinta din lut cu acoperis de stuf, la capul Dolosman, in Delta. Mi s-a parut un exercitiu al arhitectului Catalin Berescu (Coautori: arh. Mariana CELAC, Alexandru NANCU, Marian PETRE, Ioan MEDRARU; Birou de proiectare: HAR). La capitolul amenajari am gasit birourile D.S.B.A.
Mi-a placut tratarea in cheie ironica a peretilor despartitori (policarbonatul a inlocuit geamul dublu) si ideea perisabilului reflectata pe pereti: pe alocuri tencuiala e distrusa, iar structura isi exhiba indiferent armatura. Iar pe Alina n-am regasit-o nici anul asta cu ceva...

The Paper Tea House is part of an sale of Japanese art and design being held by auctioneer Phillips de Pury & Company. A "tea house", constructed of square paper tubes, is a structure designed for indoor use measuring just over 5 meters long. Conurbatia Stavanger - Sandnes din Norvegia este alaturi de Liverpool din Marea Britanie Capitala culturala a Europei pentru anul 2008. Si ce ocazie mai buna pentru norvegieni sa aiba in program un concurs de arhitectura din lemn numit "Norvegian Wood" (Stavanger are cea mai mare concentratie de case de lemn din Europa) . In cadrul concursului vor trebui construite de la blocuri de locuinte din lemn, poduri pana la cartiere intregi.

This unconventional interior design of a three rooms apartament combines elements from the pop-art age, from the aesthetics of the years ‘60-’70 and from the contemporary minimalism, all under the influence of white, used so predominant as a manifest against the impure context where the habitation takes place.

The architecs took this project while the building was still under construction, and the first proposed partition of the apartament wasn’t made. Even so, the architects felt like restrictions some characteristics of the space like the irregular shape of the plan, the dimensions of the columns which was bigger than usual or the small height under the beams. But above all an incovenince was the surface of the apartament: 110 square meters that include two bedrooms with bathrooms and dressing-rooms, and one living space with dinning room and kitchen.

The white, with all its shades,on varied textures and shapes was used to create depth and bigger height and also to give an abstract, luxurious feeling to the place beside his apparent simplicity. Using the white with no limits, the architects made the space more dinamic,and they played with the light, natural and artificial light. The first step to achieve a unitary style was to build a dialog between all the spaces in the apartament.

The long hall was designed to be an extention of the living room: on one side of he hall the architects designed a bookcase with a decorative but functional structure. Every piece of furniture was carefuly chosen to unify the concept.

If the cinema industry has taught us a lesson since its appearance is that relationships don't always last and one is inevitably bound to get a broken heart. Yet the vast majority of jewelry that celebrates the concept of love never reveals the fragility of romantic relationships. The Heartbreak consists of a fragile porcelain heart and light yet strong titanium hammer, booth are connected and made inseparable by a titanium chain. When broken the heart will show cracks, yet it will never fall apart as there is a layer of rubber on the inside that will keep the heart together. Indeed as one will usually recover from a broken heart, the small cracks will inevitably add up and form who we are. Heartbreak forms the third piece in the breakable porcelain series after Do Break and Shock Proof.

The single family house has been the privileged vehicle for formal, programmatic and technical experimentation in the 20th century. Despite this record of innovation, the gap between popular taste and high design is arguably greater than ever today. At a time when cities are modernizing at an unprecedented rate, and new technologies are filtering into all aspects of our everyday lives, the house is still viewed nostalgically.

The Sagaponac House is a prototype weekend house designed for a wooded lot in Eastern Long Island. One of a number of houses commissioned for a new residential development, our project is characterized by its compact footprint, and open interior spaces. The active roofline and wood cladding recall vernacular traditions, while the open floor plan and interlocking of solid and void acknowledge contemporary, informal lifestyles. Filtered, ambient light that changes with the seasons and the time of day fills the house from the roof lights and window walls.

Dutch architects Merkx + Girod have won the Lensvelt de Architect Interior Prize 2007 for their Boekhandel Selexyz Dominicanen in Maastricht - a bookstore inside a former Dominican church.
The prize jury said: “Merkx+Girod architects have created a contemporary bookshop in a former Dominican church, preserving the unique landmark setting. The church has been restored to its former glory and the utilities equipment has been housed in the extended cellar.
“In order to preserve the character of the church while achieving the desired commercial square footage, the architects erected a two-storey structure in black steel on one side, where the books are kept. Keeping the shop arrangement on the other side low created a clear and decipherable shop. The jury was very impressed by these spatial solutions, as well as by the gorgeous lighting plan. The combination of book complex and church interior were deemed particularly successful.”

the natural environment still manages to fill us with a sense of awe and amazement. despite the amount of scientific knowledge mankind has gathered, nature still holds great mysteries that we may never be able to unravel. this complexity has continually daunted man. in frustration, we try to control nature by enforcing order. as a result, we have distanced ourselves from the earth, even though our survival is completely dependent on it. we are now trying to regain our close connection to nature.
there is an emerging art movement that is exploring mankind's desire to reconnect to the earth, through the built environment. referred to as 'natural architecture', it aims to create a new, more harmonious, relationship between man and nature by exploring what it means to design with nature in mind.
the roots of this movement can be found in earlier artistic shifts like the 'land art' movement of the late nineteen sixties. although this movement was focused on protesting the austerity of the gallery and the commercialization of art, it managed to expand the formal link between art and nature. this has helped develop a new appreciation of nature in all forms of art and design.
the 'natural architecture' movement aims to expand on 'land art' by acting as a form of activism rather than protest. this new form of art aims to capture the harmonious connection we seek with nature by merging humanity and nature through architecture. the core concept of the movement is that mankind can live harmoniously with nature, using it for our needs while respecting its importance.
the movement is characterized by the work of a number of artists, designers and architects that express these principlesin their work. the pieces are simple, humble and built using the most basic materials and skills. because of this, the results often resemble indigenous architecture, reflecting the desire to return to a less technological world. the forms are stripped down to their essence, expressing the natural beauty inherent in the materials and location. the movement has many forms of expression that range from location-based interventions to structures built from living materials. however all of the worksin the movement share a central ethos that demonstrates a respect and appreciation for nature.

"Utzon was born in Copenhagen as the son of a naval engineer, and grew up in Denmark. In 1957 he unexpectedly won the competition for a new opera house in Sydney, Australia, despite the fact that it was his first non-domestic design and his entry did not meet the contest criteria because the designs he submitted were little better than preliminary drawings. Judge Eero Saarinen, who called it a Genius and declared he could not endorse any other choice. (In contrast, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe turned his back when introduced to Utzon, then 39.)"

1. The aspiration of the limitation of man´s presence in the eternal nature. Man- an alien -marks territory for himself, builds a roof over his head, a place in the wild nature. This is where the Finns have always sought for himself and his gods.
2. The thought of dissolving the boundary of nature and a building, nature and man, has been reached by the graininess of construction ond openness of the solution.
3. The utilisation of space has been extensively differentiated: it has been divided into private and commen rooms. In addition the rooms are separate buiding units on a common basic level and under a joint roof.
4. Each room has been given a clear identity in regard to light, feeling and relation to nature.
5. The structure is simple. The building has many rhythms and they are unrestricted. The basic sturctural idea enables construction work under the shelter of the roof from the beginning.

The starting point is the direct relation to the dramatic archipelago landscape with the objective to offer within a simple frame - a platform - several diverse readings of the relation space-nature. Conceived as a light weight construction in wood and glass, this summerhouse is built in the outer Stockholm archipelago. The horizontal character of the black stained exterior relates to the verticals of tall grown pines and the mirrored views of the Baltic Sea. The geometry of the plan is generated by the specifics of the site, the house being fitted into the flat surface between two mountain rocks and turning simultaneously towards the sun in south and frontally towards the sea in west. With the small rooms placed in the back, the social areas of the house stand out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass. The zig-zagged layout also creates a series of outside places sheltered from the strong winds.

Units 5 and 6 of the Penitentiaire Inrichting Maasbergen in Overloon is converted from an institution for adults into an juvenile detention institution. A new and more intensive interaction with the surrounding nature is aimed at for the youngsters. The result was to remove part of the interior so that that the youngsters can prepare themselves for their return in to society. The concept aims at an open, transparent building between the closed prison and the outside world. Visitors can throw a glance at the prison life and the youngsters can look at the outside world, the society in which they will return later on.

This building is located in a 10 mts. wide plot, in a typically urban block in Buenos Aires. The 12 two-storey residential units are split in two compact blocks bridged by a lightweight steel tower which connects them. This structure contains the lift shaft, the main stair and the connecting bridges. Due to the fact that the street was so narrow, the building was recessed to gain privacy from its neighbours, but recomposes the street front with a light frame. This steel grid with wooden deck floors attached to the building façades act both as the apartment expansion terraces and as louvers that guarantee filtered natural light and heat control. During the night the building interacts, turned on as a light box, with the steel frame making it look like a Chinese shadow puppet. Both blocks float over the ground floor, resting on eight concrete columns and gaining lightness and visuals from the street entrance through the rear yard, which was kept like a small garden.

Why use a straight line when you can make a curving one? Alvar Aalto's buildings have an undulating force. The walkways curl around them. The rooflines curve and soar. Even Aalto's famous vases are designed to be things of rippling contours. The Finnish 20th-century modernist architect was a master of sinuosity. If Mies van der Rohe was the high priest of angularity, Aalto was his opposite. It is Aalto's predilection for these lyrical, organic forms and natural materials that suits our current mood.
How very Finnish Aalto was. He was not, a friend once wrote, an "architect for all men". Unlike some other international modernists, Aalto was not a man with a suitcase ready packed. Of the 500 or so architectural projects of his lifetime, 400 were buildings for his native land. When he taught and built abroad, most notably in America, it seems he always hastened to return to that remote and sparsely populated country of enveloping dark winters and magical, bright summers. He was always obsessed by the quality of light.
Born in 1898 in a small rural village in southern Ostrobothnia, his father a surveyor, his grandfather a forester, Aalto kept his deep feeling for that endless Finnish landscape of forests and lakes. As an architect, what moved him was not just the lie of the land, but its practical geology. He saw building as a matter of "grappling with the very matter yielded to us by the earth's crust".
The Finland of Aalto's background was exactly that described so wonderfully in Helen Dunmore's recent novel House of Orphans: the tensions of the turn of the 19th century, the growing resistance to the Russian rule over a largely Swedish-speaking population. Finland, then a Grand Duchy of the Russian empire, did not achieve independence until 1917. Aalto inherited many of the values of the surge of nationalistic culture that overtook Finland during this unsettled period: Sibelius's music, Gallen-Kallela's paintings, Lars Sonck and Eliel Saarinen's architecture. He saw his role as architect and city planner in utopian terms, as the creation of a Finnish "earthly paradise", taking up the title of William Morris's poem. But, aesthetically, he found the "dream of the north" movement, with its emphasis on folklore and historicism, stifling: too many quasi-medieval inglenooks. His vision was much simpler and more pure.
The building that brought Aalto international recognition was the Paimio tuberculosis sanatorium, a high, white, clean-lined building in the pine forests near Turku, designed in 1929. At that time, Finns were dying from the disease at a rate of 100 a week. He conceived the building as "an instrument of healing", a beautiful and optimistic place. Having recently been ill himself, he knew that the bedridden were not like other people: supine and not upright, agonised by glaring light, painfully distracted by the noises and draughts from artificial ventilation. His aim was to provide complete peace for the patient, with purpose-designed furniture and lights, and muted colours. This was typical of Aalto's humanist approach.

By the early 1930s, Aalto was emerging as the gentler, less dogmatic face of modernism, providing an alternative to Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and other architects of the modernist elite. According to the English critic JM Richards, it was at the meetings of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne in 1929 and 1933 that these more doctrinaire architects first became aware of "the new voice from the northern fringe of Europe that was soon to add colour and richness to their somewhat austere vocabulary". Finland at the time was very little visited. Richards went to Paimio and he saw the early stages of Aalto's legendary Viipuri Library. For English architectural enthusiasts, Finland became the new cult country, promised land of sail and sauna. One or two even bought islands in the archipelago.
It is fascinating to watch how Aalto infiltrated an England otherwise so resistant to the modernists, finding them too harsh, high-principled and foreign. What was it about Aalto that made him so immediately acceptable? His lack of pomposity? His practicality? His designs have an element of peasant ingenuity, pragmatic solutions to the problems that present themselves. Aalto arrived like an influx of fresh air in the Tudorbethan England of the early 1930s. The first solo exhibition of his bentwood furniture was held in London and was enthusiastically received. Two oddities about this debut are striking in retrospect: it was held at Fortnum and Mason, Piccadilly, not a store one now associates with cutting-edge design; and Aalto's chief supporter in this country was the writer and bon viveur P Morton Shand. His granddaughter Camilla Parker Bowles later acquired a husband whose views on modern architecture have been made all too widely known.
From 1938, Aalto was designing his opus con amore, the Villa Mairea, a large family house in western Finland. There are just a handful of 20th-century houses in the western world that live on in the memory long after one has left them: Greene and Greene's Gamble House at Pasadena; Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House at Helensburgh; Eileen Gray's house, E1027, built high on the cliffs at Roquebrune; Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Aalto's Villa Mairea is one of these.
This deeply romantic and atmospheric house, set on a hilltop with views across the forest to a sawmill in the distance, is both a poem of appreciation for Marie and Harry Gullichsen, the friends and long-term collaborators who commissioned it, and Aalto's hymn to an ideal Finnish way of country life. Marie Gullichsen was herself a painter and art patron, Finland's nearest equivalent to Peggy Guggenheim. The villa, with its spatial harmonies, free forms and multiplicity of textures, is a painterly house - restful but visually very stimulating, expansive but marvellously intimate.
In the 1930s, Aalto's admiration for Japanese art, craft and design grew. He loved its poise and skill and what he saw as its "enormous sensitivity and tact towards the individual". Aalto co-founded the Helsinki Japan Club. That the current Alvar Aalto exhibition at the Barbican has been curated by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban shows that the connections are still strong. In the Villa Mairea, the Japanese and Finnish elements are fused to remarkable effect. In designing the sauna building, for example, Aalto took as his starting point the Karelian village bathing house and laundry, a homely communal building with turfed roof. He flattens and extends the roofline, paring down the structure to its purest abstract geometry. It is the sort of delicate, meditative building you find on a Kyoto temple site.
Aalto took sauna culture solemnly. He designed at least 30 saunas in his lifetime, both institutional and private. You might call the sauna Aalto's speciality. I remember a long conversation with him once on what one might call its eternal moral values, the emblematic importance of the Finnish national ritual of communal cleansing. To be authentic, the preparations for the sauna needed to be drawn out: an exquisite foreplay of heating up the stove from outside through a hole in the wall. Only an old-fashioned smoke sauna was authentic. Aalto poured scorn on the flick-of-a-switch electrical variety. When, during US-Finnish diplomatic negotiations in the 1960s, it had been suggested that Aalto should design a sauna as a gift for John F Kennedy, he refused to cooperate, suspecting that the president would not treat the sauna with the proper spiritual respect.
"Human life is a combination of tragedy and comedy. The shapes and designs that surround us are the music accompanying this tragedy and this comedy." Finland had endured a singularly tragic sequence of events in the second world war. In 1939, a few months after Aalto completed his sensational Finnish Pavilion for the World's Fair in New York, the Soviet Union invaded Finland, and in the negotiated settlement most of the eastern province of Karelia was ceded to the Russians. By the summer of 1941, the treaty with the Soviet Union had broken down and Finland entered the war on the German side. Aalto, writing in 1957 after these traumatic national vicissitudes, recognised the way in which buildings, like music, register and amplify the emotions of the times. His postwar buildings are his war requiem. His architecture entered a distinct new phase.
In Aalto's so-called "red period", the immediate postwar years, his Romantic imagination flourished. These refulgent red-brick buildings with their pitched copper roofs stood in total contrast to the tall glass buildings, such as Skidmore, Owings and Merrill's Lever House, and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, which were then de rigueur on the international scene. Aalto's steadfast red-brick structures, constructed in local materials, connect visibly with their natural environment. To the British, with our own fine tradition of brick building, the parallels are with the Kentish oast house or the medieval keep. These are children's storybook buildings, comprehensible and lovable, except that they are enormously sophisticated.
Säynätsalo Town Hall, the lecture theatre at Otaniemi Technical University, the Helsinki National Pensions Institute - Aalto's postwar practice produced poetic buildings, replete with memory and history, and they were of great importance, psychological as much as physical, in the rebuilding of Finland after the ravages of war. With its beautiful façade of red brick, copper and grey granite, the National Pensions Institute was internationally admired. It was envisaged as a part of the city, an assembly space, a modern equivalent of the Roman forum. The skylit interiors are uplifting. Perhaps only Aalto could have made a pensions office into a building of such sensuous delight.
By the time I met him in the mid-1960s he was no longer the outsider from the north, but accepted on the international scene as an architectural superstar on the level of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright. He had by then built his own Ronchamp, the Lutheran Church of the Three Crosses at Vuoksenniska. In Finland, Aalto was the king, and there was a kind of twinkliness of manner with which he both accepted and refuted such acclaim.
He received me in his purpose-designed office at Munkkiniemi in Helsinki, into which he had moved quite recently. Until then, he had always had his studio within the house where he lived. Even here, the office had a familial feel, with Elissa, Aalto's considerably younger second wife, in attendance and smiling. His first wife, Aino, had been an architect as well. The two-storey studio-office had been built within a courtyard that contained a small-scale amphitheatre structure. Aalto was a great lover of Greece, and the splayed-out form, the fan shape of the ancient theatres, was one of his recurring themes.
Aalto's lifetime spanned a mass migration of the Finns from the country to the cities. One of his preoccupations at the time I met him was how one could arrive at a modern expression of civic pride. He walked me around the giant model of his plan for the Töölö Bay area of Helsinki: lake, park and concert hall, a museum of architecture, art gallery and library, a building for the Academy of Finland. Of this vision of the fusion of nature and national culture, only the white marble Finlandia Hall was completed as he planned it. But Aalto's concept of informal modern monumentalism, our lasting need for celebratory and ruminative buildings, has been influential. The British Library, for instance, Colin St John Wilson's St Pancras masterpiece, is very Aalto-esque.
Aalto took me to lunch at the Savoy, the elegantly luxurious Helsinki restaurant he designed in 1937, another of his love poems to his patron, Marie Gullichsen. It was for the Savoy restaurant that Aalto's now iconic Savoy vase was first designed. Smoked reindeer tongue was on the menu and, as I remember, a lot of schnapps was drunk. Aalto talked with some emotion about Viipuri Library, one of his seminal early buildings which had disappeared with the Russian occupation and was believed to have been destroyed.
Its rediscovery in the late 1980s, neglected but not irrevocably damaged, was for Aalto admirers a little miracle. Gradually, in a delicate matter of cooperation between the Finns and Russians, the building is being carefully restored. The spectacularly undulating timber ceiling in the lecture hall, removed by the Russians, has now been reconstructed. It is sad to think that Aalto, who died in 1976, will never know it exists once more. He profoundly understood the transitory nature of global architecture - how, in a war-torn landscape, the buildings come and go.
